National Flower Arranging Day, May 2018

One of Rainham Club’s talented members, Alison Lowther, has placed this lovely arrangement in Wigmore Library, Rainham, in celebration of the above day on 3rd May. Our grateful thanks to Alison for doing it on behalf of us all.

April 11th – Demonstration by Graham King

Graham did not have the best of journeys getting to us, but gave us a lovely demonstration, with beautiful flowers and foliage. He kept us all amused with his self-deprecating humour, but he is obviously a very talented man, and inspired our members with his crafted leaves and flowers, and, of course, pots and containers. There were demands for a workshop with Graham to learn some of his skills, so it is fair to say that we were all impressed!

Many thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable evening, Graham, and we hope the homeward journey was better.

Plants and Flowers : a practical evening combining growing plants and cut flowers, February 2018

As usual the variety of finished work was amazing – our talented members created lovely pots in vibrant colours, and our thanks to Pat Williams who kindly commented briefly on all the designs, and to our other committee members who helped members with suggestions if required as work progressed.

We celebrated the big birthday of a founder member of our club, Barbara Mallard, who is still our President, and one of our most active members. Barbara was presented with a lovely bouquet, with our love and very best wishes. We hope Barbara knows how grateful we are for her huge contribution to Rainham Club over all those years.

We also presented our £350 cheque for last year’s charity to Alzheimers’ UK during the evening.

13th November – Christmas workshop ‘In the Round’ tutored by Jenny Abbott and Barb Nancollas

We all love a Christmas workshop: getting into the swing of the festive season with a lovely decoration for our homes, be it a wreath for the door or a placement for the hall or dining table. Jenny and Barb had provided lots of lovely examples, to provide inspiration, as well as foliage etc.

Well done to all who took part – as usual the results were beautiful and very varied. And a big thankyou to Jenny and Barb, who had put a huge amount of time and effort into all the preparation, and gave helpful tips to us all on the night.

This workshop was a huge success. Everyone taking part and everyone watching thoroughly enjoyed themselves. For most, it was a first, never having attempted an imposed before. And didn’t they do well! The arrangements were wonderful, and very varied, considering that everyone had almost the same flowers/foliage. The ‘Best in show’ went to a new member, Marina Thorne, so huge congratulations to her, and to the members’ choice winner, Jan Swift. We are so grateful to Pat Williams and Barbara Mallard, who arranged the whole thing, and put in a huge amount of work to make it such a resounding success.

We were also collecting for our nominated charity this year, which is the Alzheimer’s Society, which we chose having lost a very long-standing and popular member, Barbara Prior, to this scourge earlier in the year.  Many thanks to all our stallholders, who, with the raffle and donations raised a magnificent total of £235 on the night.
